Work can sometimes feel isolating. You do your best to lead with integrity, make wise decisions, and honor God through your work, but it’s easy to wonder if anyone notices your faithfulness or if it really makes a difference.

The book of Hebrews reminds us that we’re surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses whose lives encourage us to keep running our own race with perseverance and our eyes fixed on Christ.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” — Hebrews 12:1–2 (NIV)

What does that mean for us in today’s workplace?

What Is the Great Cloud of Witnesses?

When Hebrews speaks of the great cloud of witnesses, it points back to the men and women celebrated throughout Hebrews 11—the chapter often called the “Hall of Faith.” Abraham, Moses, Rahab, and countless others trusted God through uncertainty, hardship, and seasons where the outcome wasn’t always clear.

The lives of these witnesses serve as enduring examples of faithfulness. They remind us that following God has always been about trusting Him one faithful step at a time. Hebrews 12 builds on their stories by encouraging us to continue the race they began. Their example gives us courage to persevere, even when the path ahead feels difficult.

The same invitation remains for us today.

Running the Race Looks Different for Everyone

When we think about serving God through our work, it’s easy to assume that influence belongs only to business owners, executives, pastors, or ministry leaders; however, Scripture paints a different picture.

God calls people into every kind of vocation. Some lead organizations. Others teach students, repair vehicles, care for patients, build homes, write software, manage projects, or serve customers. Some are just beginning their careers, while others have decades of experience behind them.

Each role offers an opportunity to reflect Christ.

You don’t have to own a company for your work to matter, and you don’t have to be a CEO to lead with purpose. Wherever God has placed you, your work can become an expression of faithfulness.

The race God has marked out for each of us may look different, but the call to follow Him faithfully where you are remains the same.

Faithfulness Is Often Quiet

When we hear stories about faith at work, we sometimes expect dramatic moments—major business breakthroughs, miraculous provisions, or bold public declarations. Those moments certainly happen. More often, though, workplace faith is much quieter.

This may look like:

  • Choosing honesty when cutting corners would be easier.
  • Treating coworkers with dignity during stressful seasons.
  • Leading with humility instead of pride.
  • Making difficult decisions with integrity, even when they come at a personal cost.
  • Showing patience with a frustrated customer
  • Extending grace to a struggling employee
  • Doing excellent work even when no one seems to notice.

These everyday decisions rarely make headlines, yet they are often where our faith is seen most clearly.

Some of the most powerful witnesses are faithfully showing up on Monday morning, serving Christ through ordinary work with extraordinary consistency.

Why Stories Matter

Throughout Scripture, God uses stories to strengthen His people.

Again and again, we’re reminded to remember His faithfulness and share what He has done. Testimonies encourage us because they reveal God’s presence in real situations faced by real people. The same is true today.

When we hear how another business owner navigated an ethical challenge, how a manager chose integrity under pressure, or how a young professional learned to trust God during uncertainty, we’re reminded that we’re not alone in our own journey. Their experiences point us back to Christ, the One who gives each of us strength to keep running.

That’s the heart behind Cloud of Witnesses: Workplace Faith Stories, a new podcast from C12 Greater Detroit.
