When you hear the word “stewardship,” do you instantly think of spreadsheets, giving campaigns, or budget meetings? If so, you’re not alone. Many Christian business leaders view stewardship through a financial lens. But what does the Bible say about stewardship? Scripture presents a much more expansive vision.
Scripture tells us that being a steward means faithfully managing everything God entrusts to us: not only money but also resources, relationships, reputations, and even opportunities. By viewing these gifts as treasures to steward rather than assets to own, we can better align growth, messaging, and impact with God’s Word.
A Biblical Blueprint for Stewardship
Scripture is clear: The earth and everything on it are the Lord’s (Psalm 24:1), and we are called to steward God’s resources with wisdom and purpose. Romans 14:12 reminds us, “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” That accountability extends to all we do in life and in leadership.
In the parables of the talents (Matthew 25:14–30) and the ten minas (Luke 19:11–27), Jesus calls us to use our abilities and resources wisely in service to God. Faithful stewardship lets us multiply our God-given gifts and Kingdom impact both personally and professionally.
Stewarding Every Corner of Your Business
Faithful leadership touches every part of an organization. C12’s 5-Point Alignment Assessment offers a helpful framework; consider whether you’re behind target, on target, or ahead of target in these areas:
- Revenue generation: Are we pursuing growth with integrity across sales, marketing, product line management, and customer relationships?
- Operations management: Are we building sustainable, God-honoring systems, from the supply chain to administration?
- Organizational development: From recruitment to succession planning, are we investing in people, not just performance?
- Financial management: Are we managing goals, projections, reporting, and other financial aspects of the business with discipline and transparency?
- Ministry: Are we building eternal fruit into our company culture through ministry giving, discipleship, and other impactful methods?
When you meet or exceed your targets in all five of these areas, stewardship becomes ingrained in your company culture and values.
Stewarding Trust in a Distrusting World
Trust in institutions continues to decline. According to the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer, 61% of people globally report believing that government and business make life harder and primarily serve the interests of the wealthy and powerful.
These numbers present a unique opportunity for Christian leaders. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright guides them.” When we communicate clearly, lead honestly, and serve consistently, we reflect Christ through our leadership. Stewarding trust becomes a form of ministry, expressed through brand messaging, customer care, and relational marketing.
As you consider your institution’s own “trust barometer,” ask yourself: Are we managing the trust we’ve been given with intentionality and transparency?
Stewarding Influence as a Witness
Jesus didn’t simply steward money or miracles; He stewarded moments. In John 4, He meets a Samaritan woman at a well and transforms an everyday interaction into a life-changing encounter. He saw the person, the need, and the opportunity.
As Christian business leaders, we have similar moments every day with employees, clients, and even competitors. Are we stewarding not just our tasks but also testimony? When we treat stewardship as an act of surrender, not control, we can view everyday moments as kingdom opportunities.
What Does the Bible Say About Stewardship? It Starts With Surrender
Faithful stewardship reveals itself not in flashy gestures but rather in the daily, quiet work of aligning leadership with God’s purposes. Are there areas of your business where you are managing well but not lacking stewardship? Remember, the more we care for what God has entrusted to us, the more eternal fruit we can bear.
